Graham Chronofighter Superlight Carbon Skeleton Red Watch Review
Thursday - 08 October 2020
Breaking boundaries of luxury watch design is one thing, but Graham have a talent for completely changing the rules proven by some of their latest “A Week A Watch” releases. The embodiment of this thinking is the Graham Chronofighter Superlight Carbon Skeleton Red watch, a remarkable 47mm timepiece with a red epoxy resin and black carbon fibre case and a complex skeletonised dial.
The Graham Chronofighter Superlight Carbon Skeleton Red is by no means a subtle watch and considerably unsuitable for anyone looking for an understated timepiece they can shrewdly slip under the cuff of their sleeve. Instead, Graham manufacture statement pieces that truly bring that “wow factor” with visually stunning and mechanically impressive aesthetics.
The obvious main attraction to the Graham Chronofighter Superlight Carbon Skeleton Red is its case. Engineered from red-dyed epoxy resin and black carbon fibre, the 47mm case looks absolutely mesmerising up close. In fact, the resin has metal fibres moulded into it creating an almost red translucent matrix of colours and shapes, a matrix that is completely unique in each design. The resin has also been engineered with an anti-UV additive to ensure the colour doesn’t fade. Black 3k carbon is used on the bezel, trademark crown lever and strap buckle providing a lightweight yet durable finish. In total, the watch weighs less than 100g.
Housed within the Graham Chronofighter Superlight Carbon Skeleton Red watch is the G1790 automatic skeleton chronograph calibre based on the ever-reliable Valjoux 7750. The in-house movement provides central hands for hours, minutes and chronograph seconds, a bi-compax chronograph layout for small seconds and 30 minutes counter and a power reserve of 48 hours. The 29 jewelled calibre also promises a frequency of 28'800 beats per hour and comes equipped with an Incabloc shock absorber for ultimate resilience against shocks.
Through the remarkable skeletonised dial, protected by scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass, the Graham Chronofighter Superlight Carbon Skeleton Red watch shows off a view of the balance wheel and escapement alongside Superluminova spade hands decorated in red to match the red-dyed resin. The black layered dial also pairs with the view through the smoked exhibition case back in which contrasting black and rhodium plated bridges are fixed with polished display screw. Hand drawn engraving handsomely finishes off the winding weight.
In conclusion, the Graham Chronofighter Superlight Carbon Skeleton Red is a remarkable piece that any admirer of statement, complex and unusual timepieces would feel lucky to own.
