Arnold & Son Introduces Luna Magna Platinum Meteorite Limited Edition
Tuesday - 22 November 2022
There will be only 28 editions of the new Luna Magna Platinum Meteorite watch from Arnold & Son. It features a captivating 3D moon phase indication that appears to float atop a sand-coloured PVD-treated meteorite dial. This is the sixth Arnold & Son watch to join the captivating solar system-inspired Luna Magna watch collection.
Released earlier this year, the recent Arnold & Son Luna Magna Ultimate II watch was a sight to behold. Casting a neon-turquoise light across its dial with its selection of Paraiba tourmalines and a hand-picked selection of diamonds, the spellbinding moon phase iteration joins an aventurine and marble version from the same collection, in gold and in platinum. Yet this new Luna Magna watch could be the most exciting and alluring one yet. Decked in platinum and meteorite, its sand-coloured PVD-coated dial finish is home to a realistic and practical 3D moon phase feature that combines with a milky white opaline off-centre dial to promote perfect timekeeping.
The sixth edition of the Luna Magna watch collection by Arnold & Son delivers a subtle palette of sandy colours, grey stone shades and polished platinum curves. The collection, meaning “Large Moon” captures the satellite in a three-dimensional light. The Luna Magna watches continue on from the Perpetual Moon and Double Hemisphere Perpetual Moon watches released in 2016 – two models that embodied the manufacturer’s obsession with the moon and all things cosmos. This interpretation features a large 12mm spherical moon design in a large aperture in the southern hemisphere of the dial, balanced with the hour and minutes displayed above it. Although keeping the size, style and layout the same as the other models from the Luna Magna series, this new Platinum Meteorite moon phase watch is presented in subtler, more muted tones for an understated finish to the wrist. These shades also cleverly capture the realistic textures and tones of the moon as we see it from Earth.
The new Arnold & Son Luna Magna Platinum Meteorite Limited Edition watch
The dial of the new Luna Magna Platinum Meteorite Limited Edition watch incorporates a special effect where Octahedrites – a common class of iron meteorites – reveal a unique pattern named Widmanstatten. It occurs when a cut and polished piece of meteorite comes into contact with dilute acid. This crisscrossing pattern is then combined with a sandy-coloured PVD coating to create a Moondust texture across the surface of the display. In fact, when light hits the surface of this Luna Magna watch, it creates a shimmering, iridescence. The unique way to keep track of the moon’s sunlit proportions is enhanced all the more by the use of meteorite and milky white Cacholong opal. The rotating sphere features darker meteorite to represent the dark side of the moon and white glowing shades of the opal for the sunlit angles. In the dark, the legibility of the moon phase indication is amplified by the use of Super-LumiNova. Its blue-green glow cannot be seen in daylight but adds cosmic allure to the timepiece in the darkest hours of the night. The astronomical accuracy of Arnold & Son’s moon phase indication ensures a full 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 2.8 seconds. The feature, therefore, would only need adjusting once every 122 years! If not kept wound, however, you can adjust the feature through the 3 o’clock crown, stamped with Arnold & Son’s recognisable logo.
At 12 o’clock, you can keep track of the passing hours and minutes of the day against an opal sub-dial. Here, crisp black Arabic numerals are addressed by open-worked blued hands. This opal sub-dial glows, like the 3D moon, during the night. These hands are controlled by a hand-wound calibre. The manual winding A&S1021 Calibre can be admired through the back of the case via a piece of sapphire crystal glass, along with the reverse side of the 3D moon. To accommodate its rounded profile, the sapphire glass is domed both on the back and front of the case. The movement has been developed by La Joux-Perret, sister of the Arnold & Son company, and boasts traditional Geneva stripes, blued chamfered screws, and satin-finished wheels. It performs at a rate of 21,600 vibrations per hour and provides a power reserve of 90 hours.
The case of the new Arnold & Son Luna Magna Platinum Meteorite Limited Edition watch features a 44mm diameter and a height of 15.90mm. It has been crafted from polished platinum and is water resistant up to 30 meters. The eight phases of the moon are displayed more accurately through the back of the case via an indicator that shows a simplified version of the new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, last quarter and waning crescent. Completing its elegant design is a hand-stitched grey alligator leather strap with a pin buckle crafted from polished platinum, stamped with the A & S logo.
