Angelus Chronodate Titanium Fern Green Watch Review

Before Watches & Wonders 2023 kicks off, Angelus extends its popular Chronodate watch, this time in a titanium case with black carbon composite elements and a striking fern green dial. Meet the new Angelus Chronodate Titanium Fern Green watch.

A brief history of Angelus watches

Angelus has gained global recognition for its technical masterpieces throughout its history and many of its timepieces are coveted the world over for their beautifully powered movements and their vintage charm. Unfortunately, along with many other Swiss watchmakers during the 1970s, Angelus – a company that was founded back in 1891 in La Chaux-de-Fonds - succumbed to the quartz crisis and lay dormant for an entire three decades. Once revived back in 2015, it was taken on by La Joux-Perret who has used some of the brand’s previous mechanical marvels from its back catalogue and brought them into the 21st century, all the while, losing none of the brand’s charm or heritage.

Today, Angelus pays homage to it most respected chronograph, the Chronodate – a model that followed the company’s mono-pusher chronographs from 1935. The Chronodate, later renamed to the Chronodato a year later, was designed in 1942 and was distinguishable by its pointer hand that indicated the date of the month with an outer scale residing around the periphery. In addition to this, the day and month indicators were displayed at the north and south location of the dial, along with the Chronograph counters laid out in a bicompax arrangement. Although the day and month features have been lost, experts at Angelus have only further improved the watch, replacing these details with finer elements that can be appreciated wholly by enthusiasts. These include sharp angular finishes, a multi-piece case construction, slopes, curves and a mixture of polished, sunray and satin-brushed finishes.

The new Angelus Chronodate Titanium Fern Green watches

The new Angelus Chronodate Titanium and 5N rose gold watches certainly take the form of other recently released models from the line. The fern green titanium iteration, which we’re covering in more detail today, is crafted from a modular 6-piece case construction with a housing forged from black carbon composite and titanium. One of the key attributes of the Chronodate watch collection is its shock-resistant construction inside the case, which protects the movement from damage via an inner carbon composite ring. This specific material is chosen by Angelus experts for its rigidity and its lightweight composition. Historically we have also seen the middle case and the push-pieces at 2 and 4 o’clock on the case crafted from matte black material. Underneath the notched bezel is another carbon composite ring to complete this sound structure. The new Angelus Chronodate watches are manufactured in the same way. Each case measures a 42.5mm diameter and features a movement that is encased within a machined carbon composite compartment. Matching this material are the push-pieces located at the side of the case, which are directly applied to the vessel of the case.

Between the middle case and the bezel of the new Angelus Chronodate Titanium Fern Green watch is a ring that runs through the sections of the watch, also crafted from carbon composite. Bringing the case middle and the lugs into a single line is a section of titanium. The 12-notched bezel is also crafted from the same material to complete the design of the Chronodate watch. The fern green version of the new Chronodate watch has received a shot of vivid red seen in the push-pieces and the tip of the pointer hand, as well as the 30-minute sub-counter hand. The other sub-counter, balancing out the display at 9 o’clock features the subsidiary seconds and both counters are filled in with a velvet black colour to create a contrast against the shimmering green colour of the dial. The rhodium-plated central hands of the dial have been treated with luminous material to improve legibility in the dark and the Arabic numeral hour markers also illuminate at night. The new titanium Angelus Chronodate watches for 2023 are 30-meter water resistant and come fitted on a choice of a black rubber strap or a titanium link bracelet equipped with a folding clasp.

Powering the Chronodate Titanium watch is the A 500 Calibre,  equipped with beautifully decorated components and capable of producing a power reserve of 60 hours. Amongst some of its finest features are a sandblasted and NAC-treated mainplate, satin-finished and micro-blasted bridges, and a tungsten oscillating weight. The movement is protected within Angelus’ innovative shock-resistant housing and sits underneath a case that has been topped with a boxed sapphire crystal glass front with layers of applied anti-reflective technology. You can enjoy the new fern green version of the Angelus Chronodate Titanium watch with casual, classic or professional attire. Its sumptuous shimmering fern green dial catches the light effortlessly, whilst delivering a chronograph function, the main time and a pointer date feature all wrapped up inside one 42.5mm case.
