A Look at the Alpina Alpiner Extreme Automatic Watches of 2022

Last year, Alpina decided to reinvent the Alpiner Extreme Automatic, the cornerstone of the brand’s range of sporty, outdoor-ready watches designed for adventure. Its aggressive look was given an overhaul, giving it a newly down-sized case and a time-and-date model that can easily double up as a daily companion for the wrist. Meet the Alpina Alpiner Extreme Automatic watch, presented in black, deep green and rich blue dial colours.

If you’re new to the Alpina brand, you may only have associated the name with mountaineering-style field watches in the past, but the company’s catalogue is more diverse than that. To keep things simple to digest, the brand has four core collections. There’s the Alpina Alpiner line, geared towards adventurers, the Alpina Startimer line of pilot’s watches, the Seastrong line for divers and the Comtesse line designed for those with smaller wrists and with finer details. The recently released Extreme Automatic watches belong to the Alpiner line. These watches used to have a squarish case and were known for their angular aesthetics combined with textural finishes. Now, the three newer models take on a smaller, softer cushion-shaped case and come in three dial colours; black, deep green and dark blue.

The modernised and aggressive all-purpose Alpiner Extreme Automatic watch has a rugged case construction made from stainless steel that makes it perfect for all kinds of outdoor pursuits. It carries plenty of the same spirit as the original 2009 model but now measures a more compact and manageable 41mm diameter with an integrated 200-meter water resistance. It has a layered and textured look, enhanced by a textured dial that really looks the part when donning it to the wrist with harsh weather gear for a true outdoor mission. To resume its assertive nature, experts at Alpina equip this watch with 6 screws bolted down onto a brushed steel bezel. Each screw bears the mountainous triangular symbol associated with Alpina’s heritage. The case sides are a mixture of recessed angular, chamfered, brushed and polished finishes which altogether donate a sense of depth and dimension to this robust tool. A rubberised knurling is given to the screw-down crown at 3 o’clock on the sides of this Alpiner watch’s case, allowing it to be easily operated through heavy gloves.

Inside the cases of these recently released Alpina Alpiner Extreme Automatic watches is the Calibre AL-525 based on a Sellita engine, which is put on display through a sapphire crystal glass exhibition caseback. Here, you get to watch the movement perform whilst it delivers a total power reserve of 38 hours. The movement also performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations and comprises a total of 26 jewels.

The three new dials of the Alpina Alpiner Extreme Automatic watches are black, deep green and dark blue. Each one features a detailed pattern adorned with engraved triangles that, once again, reinforce the Alpina emblem as a mark of respect and authenticity. A sloped flange has white minute markers that frame an hour track represented by applied stick markers that have been treated with Super-LumiNova. The central hour and minute hands have also been treated with this same material, whilst the central seconds hand remains thin and discreet with a red triangular counterweight. At 3 o’clock on each dial, a rectangular date window cuts into the surface, making it easy to follow the passing days of each month.

The three new Alpina Alpiner Extreme Automatic watches are fitted on black, blue and grey rubber straps that match their black, blue and green dials respectively. These rubber bands have a tappisserie-like texture and secure to the underside of the wrist with a stainless steel folding buckle.
