Longines Conquest 1/100th Horse Racing Watch Review
Friday - 24 October 2014
The timepiece is part of the Longines Conquest 1/100th series, a line of watches specially created for sports that require high precision timing. These Longines watches measure multiple intermediary times and feature an intuitive analogue display that shows the time to one hundredth of a second using a separate hand.
Precise timing is of vital importance in horse racing. Christiane 'Criquette' Head-Maarek, one of the best race horse trainers and friend of the Longines brand, explains: "Thoroughbreds are top athletes; it requires a great deal of precision to train them. You have to be able to measure their performances to almost one hundredth of a second at each section of the course. A thoroughbred can run at 50 km/h for more than one kilometer, with a burst of speed at 70 km/h. At this speed, one hundredth of a second equates to 20 cm; that's enough distance to win by a neck's length!"
This demand for extreme precision led to the development of the new L440 quartz chronograph movement. The Longines Conquest 1/100th Horse Racing includes a microcontroller with a flash memory, allowing it to be reset instantly and allows intermediary times to be recorded.
The watch has a 41 mm stainless steel case, with a silver dial and a central red hand that displays time to one hundredth of a second. There is a date aperture at 4 o'clock, a 30-minute counter at 2 o'clock, a 12-hour counter at 10 o'clock, and a small seconds display at 6 o'clock. The Conquest 1/100th Horse Racing features sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective coating and a screw-in case back. It comes with a stainless steel bracelet with triple safety folding clasp and a push-piece opening mechanism.
