The Nomos Orion Neomatik Black Watch Done Three Ways

There are three new black iterations of the softly spoken Orion watch by Nomos. The trouble is, how do you choose between them?

Don’t get me wrong, we all love the playfully colourful shades of Nomos’ recent Bauhaus-inspired watches. But there is something seductive about a pure black dial that cannot be put into words. And, if there was one collection deserving of a sleek black makeover, it goes to the Orion watch collection. The line has undeniably sophisticated and dressy vibes. Today, that collection expands to accommodate a black dial with luxurious golden and silver elements.

Apart from their size differences, you could be forgiven for thinking these three watches all look the same. But I assure you they aren’t. Nomos plays with different colour combinations but in very subtle ways. One model also comes with a date function for discreetly keeping track of the passing days within each month. What these three new Nomos Orion watches have in common with the rest of the brand’s catalogue, however, is that captivating minimalist look.

Where the Nomos Orion is concerned, no one size fits all. And it’s not even about opting for the case size you’d normally choose across all brands either. No, it matters not so much about the case size in this instance, but the wrist that wears it. Whether you have a small or large wrist, you’ll already know that all watches fit differently. These three Nomos watches give you plenty of flexibility for finding the perfect fit. Nothing beats trying a watch on for size and we have a great team here at Jura Watches that can organise a convenient time for you to pop into one of our local stores to try one on for size. If you’re already familiar with the Nomos Orion, however, you’ll know your preferred size already.

The Nomos Orion Neomatik Black 36mm

The smallest of the new black-dial Nomos Orion Neomatik trio is the 36.4mm model. The model is equipped with 50-meter water resistance and is powered by the DUW 3002. The movement may not have an official chronometer status but Nomos makes a deal of the fact that its in-house developed engines are all adjusted according to chronometer standards. Equipped with a bidirectional rotating rotor, the movement provides a 43-hour power reserve and boasts a beautifully customised three-quarter plate. Glashutte stripes also add to the movement’s regionally decorated (and very traditional) techniques. These features are put on show through a sapphire crystal glass exhibition caseback. The watch features a black dial with alluring yellow golden hour markers and a set of rhodium central hands that add silvery tones to the display.

The Nomos Orion Neomatik 39mm

The 39mm model is the next size up. It features another galvanised black domed dial, this time adorned with silver indices around the hour track and a set of silver-coloured central hour and minute hands. A Horween Genuine Shell Cordovan leather strap in black completes the subdued and sober design of these new Orion watches. Of course, no other strap could create the same classic finish as the Horween Genuine Shell Cordovian type. Any other strap would only sit in the long shadow of this premium band and its association with the prestigious Glashutte watchmaker. It completes all three designs perfectly. The model also uses the same movement.

Although bigger, the extra millimetres of the 39mm model do not give it any more presence than the smaller versions. The lack of gold, however, gives the watch a more understated look that balances out the difference between the two models. The softly spoken watch has diamond-polished indices and hands and a formal character. The “Neomatik” lettering is finished in gold though, as are the other two models.

The Nomos Orion Neomatik 41mm

While the plated golden hour markers of this 41mm model (and the 39mm) add a touch of subtle frivolity and a warm richness to the Orion, on the whole, it is quite an introverted design. Everything on the dial of this watch is bigger and more obvious than its two smaller siblings. It makes for a slightly more legible display. The watch’s lens-shaped case leads to flowing, curved lugs that certainly nod to the brand’s modern and minimalist approach to watchmaking. That said, there is no mistaking the examples of traditional, classic watchmaking that run through the core of the brand’s Orion collection, like a strand of DNA.

The 41mm design is proportionally bigger but just as classy and sophisticated. The gold-plated hands are a nice touch, pairing well with the small seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock that features on all three iterations. The smaller details are the nicest, of course! Gold numerals inside the date window beautifully match the golden indices around the hour track and the Neomatik text below the brand name at 12 o’clock.

Featuring a date indicator means that this larger model is also powered by a larger movement. It’s the trustworthy DUW-6101 that is chosen in this instance. Once more, it is beautifully decorated and put on show through the back of the case via a sapphire crystal glass window.

If you’re neither a date nor no-date person, you may struggle to choose between these three models. The benefit here is that neither of them look too different, so regardless of the size, you’re getting the same design. The touches of gold tones are certainly the defining features of the 36mm and 41mm models, but if you’re looking for something a little more sophisticated, the middle of the three is a superb choice.
