Reviewing the Angelus Chronodate Titanium and 5N Rose Gold Black Dial Watches

Angelus releases a titanium and 5N rose gold version of its Chronodate watch ahead of Watches & Wonders 2023, complete with a legible black dial

Angelus' relationship with the noble Chronodate watch is bound by a love of the classic chronograph and wrapped in an affection for the complexity of a triple calendar function. The first model was released back in 1942 and was renamed the Chronodato just a year later. The Chronodate watch followed on from the mono-pusher chronograph model launched by Angelus in 1935. The Chronodate had a relatively unique dial layout, with a date indicated by a hand that circled a chapter ring around the periphery of the dial. The original day and month were showcased in sub-counters that were located at the 12 and 6 o’clock areas.

Today, Angelus Chronodate watches are crafted from a modular 6-piece case construction with a housing crafted from black carbon composite, titanium or 5N rose gold. One of the key attributes of the Chronodate watch collection is its shock-resistant construction inside the case, which protects the movement from damage via an inner carbon composite ring. This specific material is chosen by Angelus experts for its rigidity and its lightweight composition. Historically we have also seen the middle case and the push-pieces at 2 and 4 o’clock crafted from matte black material. Underneath the notched bezel is another carbon composite ring.

Although modern-day descendants of the Chronodate family forego the day and month feature, the younger generation of Chronodate watches for men remain incredibly simple and hassle-free. The design is clean and purposeful. The push-pieces are always endowed with a pop of colour and are labelled clearly, whilst the date hand is hollowed out at the pointer tip. The new Angelus Chronodate watches come in a titanium case and is represented in a black dial and a fern green dial. Both iterations feature a bicompax chronograph dial layout and come on a choice of a black rubber band or a matching titanium link bracelet. The black dial version is also offered in a more luxurious 5N rose gold case and is completed on a matching black rubber band. Today we’ll look at the classic black dial version of the new Angelus Chronodate Red Gold and Titanium watches.

The new Angelus Chronodate Titanium and 5N Rose Gold Black Dial watches

Good news for those desperate to get their hands on the latest Angelus Chronodate watch for 2023, as all references, whether the titanium version or the rose gold version are unlimited references. Combining the historical Angelus brand and the Angelus of today, the Chronodate watches, released just in time for the Watches & Wonders 2023 event, are dynamic, sporty and ultra-masculine. Paying homage to its history and the release of the double push-piece chronograph wristwatches it produced in the 1930s, these multi-material and multi-piece constructions house a relentless movement inside their robust cases and look sharp on the wrist.

The black dial versions of the Angelus Chronodate watch, as aforementioned, are offered in a lightweight titanium case or an 18ct rose gold case. The design of the case is not only an interesting talking point for fellow luxury watch enthusiasts but serves a very practical purpose, protecting the movement from all manner of damage. Each case measures a 42.5mm diameter and features a movement that is encased within a machined carbon composite compartment. Matching this material are the push-pieces located at the side of the case, which are directly applied to the vessel of the case.

Between the middle case and the bezel is a ring that runs through the sections of the watch, also crafted from carbon composite. Bringing the case middle and the lugs into a single line is a section of titanium or 5N rose gold (depending on the model in question). The 12-notched bezel is also crafted from the same material to complete the design of the Chronodate watch. A mixture of taut, bevelled and sloping lines make up the design of the new Angelus Chronodate watch of 2023 - its right angles and curves donating a distinctive sporty edge that is familiar with this line.

Since historical Chronodate watches from Angelus measured smaller in size, the designs of the new generation are given oversized counters to achieve the same look, despite measuring a larger diameter of 42.5mm. The velvet black dial has tone-on-tone counters that offer a chronograph 30-minute function at 3 o’clock and a small seconds function at 9 o’clock. Joining these features is an hour track represented by chunky Arabic numerals that have been filled with Super-LumiNova material.

Powering the hands around the dial of this new Angelus Chronodate watch is the Calibre A500 with a sandblasted and NAC-treated main plate and micro-blasted bridges with satin-finished edges. The wheels of the movement are rhodium-plated and circular-grained whilst the oscillating weight is crafted from tungsten. This self-wind movement is capable of oscillating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and delivers a power reserve of 60 hours once wound fully.

Additional features of the new Angelus Chronodate Titanium and Rose gold watches include a 30-meter water resistance, a boxed sapphire crystal glass front and a sapphire-backed case that exposes all the finest elements of the movement whilst at play. The watches, as mentioned, can be enjoyed on a black rubber strap, or a titanium bracelet with a folding clasp.
