Raymond Weil Freelancer Chronograph 7741 Watches Review
Friday - 13 January 2023
The new Raymond Weil Freelancer Chronograph 7741 watches come in silver, white and green dial options and feature a dateless display for the first time in the popular Freelancer range. The choice to do so donates more space on the dial for straightforward timekeeping and effortless stopwatch timings.
In such a competitive market, many luxury watch brands are having to try extra hard to convince consumers to invest in the quality of a Swiss watch, whilst not needing to go quite as far as a Rolex or Patek Philippe. Raymond Weil, however, needn’t put much effort into this. The brand’s timepieces capture the hearts and minds of avid Swiss watch fans easily, with the company’s elegant designs influenced by the art and music industry. Named after famous operas and dances, many of Raymond Weil’s collections inspire us to harness our inner creativity whilst reducing timekeeping features to the essentials. That is certainly the style of the Raymond Weil Freelancer watch collection. These timepieces come in various forms from simple three-handed models to GMT complications to sporty chronographs. One of the brand’s most recent Freelancer watches for 2022 is the latter. It comes in four different colourways and blends modern features with a subtle vintage charm, appealing to both sides of the Freelancer-loving coin.
The new series of Raymond Weil Freelancer Chronograph 7741 watches comes in a choice of three different dial colours (white, green and silver) but four different variations in total. The two white dial options have black sub-dial trims and silver-coloured hands and indexes. The silver dial option comes with black trimmed chronograph counters but with rose gold-coloured indexes and hands. All three of these dials are framed by a black-filled ceramic tachymeter bezel. The green option features silver-coloured chronograph counter trims to match the hands and hour markers but offers a tachymeter bezel in green. The two white dial options are differentiated by a stainless steel bracelet or black calf leather strap, whilst the silver dial version is fitted on a brown calf leather strap. The green Raymond Weil Freelancer Chronograph 7741 comes on a coordinated green leather strap, communicating the most adventurous design of all four.
The case
The case of the new Raymond Weil Freelancer Chronograph 7741 watches are all crafted from stainless steel and come with an integrated water resistance of 100 meters. They measure a diameter of 43mm and a height of 13.7mm. Sharp, angular and bevelled lugs take on a vintage persona, whilst horizontally brushed sides and brushed interior lugs add depth and detail to the design. Polished push-pieces and monogrammed crowns stand out nicely in each design. The steel model with silver dial and rose gold dial elements flaunts rose gold-coloured push-pieces that work incredibly well with the model’s brown leather strap.
The dial
Differing from other Raymond Weil Freelancer Chronograph watches in the collection, the new 7741 models are the first to offer a dateless dial layout, with sub-counters neatly balanced at the 3-6-9 layout. Surrounding the white, silver and green dials is a sloped chapter ring with minutes and seconds displayed legibly around the edge. The pill-shaped hour markers on each watch are applied against a circular groove effect, accompanied by luminous pips to enhance readability during the night. The central luminous-coated hour and minute hands of all four models are paired with recessed chronograph sub-counters offering 30-minutes at 3 o’clock, a 12-hour totaliser at 6 o’clock and small seconds at 9 o’clock. All of these small counters feature the same satin finish as seen on the main dial.
The movement
Flip the case of the new Raymond Weil Freelancer Chronograph 7741 over and you’re instantly granted a clear view of the automatic Calibre RW5030 working away effortlessly inside the model’s steel case. The movement, based on the ETA 7753, showcases blued screws, perlage and a customized rotor through a sapphire-backed case. It provides a power reserve of 56 hours once fully wound and performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour.
