Meistersinger Unveils New Pangaea 365 Limited Edition

Housed in smaller dimensions and equipped with a different engine, the new limited edition Meistersinger Pangea 365 for 2022 of just 200 pieces has followed suit with similar vintage-inspired characteristics to the earlier Pangea 366 of 2020.

It might sound like a novel concept to some – the single-handed watch – but this approach to timekeeping, adopted by no other than Munster-based watchmaker Meistersinger, actually dates back to the 18th century with the ‘souscription’ watch developed by Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1796. In fact, single-handed clocks were around much earlier than Breguet. Take, for example, the cities of Augsburg and Nuremberg which led the way with single-handed clocks of the very highest calibre during the 16th and 17th centuries. But to modern watch collectors (particularly those with a keen interest in German watch manufacture) single-handed horology is synonymous with watches like the Pangea. Meistersinger released the stylish Pangea 366 in 2020 and the follow-on from that is the brand’s new Meistersinger Pangea 365 with a distinctly more retro feel. That said, the 2020 Pangea 366 watch was also unequivocally different in terms of the contemporary nature of Meistersinger’s signature look. The watch had notable vintage-inspired aesthetics, along with a single hand with an arrow-shaped tip and circular counterweight upon a dashboard instrument-inspired dial.

The new Meistersinger Pangea 365

At first glance, the new Meistersinger Pangea 365 watch for 2022 looks to have followed suit but does reveal some subtle differences to appreciate. To start with, it features a smaller case and a different movement. A rich ivory hue forms the backdrop to the dial’s features, giving the instrument a retro-inspired edge. In true Meistersinger style, the central hand is the format to reference both the minutes and the hours from. In one way, this unique approach strips timekeeping back to basics and encourages the wearer to focus on the essentials of timekeeping rather than worry about the smaller details. On the other hand, it can provide a very accurate form of timekeeping via an incredibly legible display. This is what makes a Meistersinger watch so special and collectable. The central black hand features the same arrow-shaped tip and circular counterweight, as well as an additional black circle in between the two. This central hand glides over the ivory dial, visiting the Arabic numeral hour markers that have been represented in a double-digit format and a crisp black colour. Looking closer at the track, there are black, blue and red lines that each represent something different. There’s also a discreet 24-hour track around the outer edge of the dial.

The new Meistersinger Pangea 365, despite its retro-inspired looks, is a relatively simple design and has thus been fitted with a reliable yet simple automatic movement – the Sellita SW-200. It provides a 38-hour power reserve and performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour. The watch, crafted from polished stainless steel measures a 40mm diameter and a height of 10.5mm. To assist with 50-meter water resistance, the model is topped with a domed anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass front. The back of the case is an exhibition type and is also crafted from sapphire crystal glass. It provides a glimpse into the workings of the Sellita SW 200 movement whilst in motion. To finish, the model comes complete in a brown leather strap with crocodile embossed print and a stainless steel pin buckle engraved with the famous Meistersinger logo.

Without a doubt, the new limited-edition Meistersinger Pangea 365 taps into a more historical style that nods to 19th-century pocket watches thanks to its ivory dial, imbued with plenty of vintage charm. The brand’s signature single-handed dial is a quirky way to tell the time for anyone new to the Meistersinger stratosphere, plus it reinterprets yesteryear with a very legible layout that certainly won’t add unnecessary fuss when intuitively reading the time this way. Like other Meistersinger Pangea watches, the bezel of the watch is incredibly slim and the perfectly round case remains faithful to its familiar design. Lastly, the touches of colour on its cursive typecase are undeniably attractive, with numbers that can easily be picked out.
