Monday - 09 January 2023
The new Raymond Weil Freelancer Chronograph 7780 watches for 2022 come in a bronze and titanium PVD-coated version. Both models exert the fun and character of the brand and its unwavering dedication to continue reinventing itself to answer the needs of its sports watch enthusiasts
Family watchmaking firm Raymond Weil operates within the affordable luxury watch sector and has long been associated with its timepieces inspired by music and art. Known to have some fun with its broad range of luxury wristwatches, this latest addition to the Freelancer collection is yet another interesting and affordable watch to own. The release of the new Raymond Weil Freelancer Chronograph 7780 watch could suggest an exciting new direction for the Swiss brand with this vintage-inspired number offered in a limited edition bronze version and a non-limited PVD-coated titanium version. Both watches showcase a stunning gradient or “fume” finish upon their dials, becoming progressively darker towards the edges. The dials also relay their stopwatch features on a bi-compax layout, with sub-counters positioned on an east-west axis for an even more retro-infused look.
Each of the new Raymond Weil Freelancer Chronograph 7780 watches feature tall faceted lugs and pump pushers located at 2 and 4 o’clock. Both cases have also been executed in a brushed effect, creating a rugged character, whilst their broad dimensions measure a diameter of 43.5mm and a height of 13.7mm. Whereas the bronze version of the new Raymond Weil Freelancer Chronograph watch ref 7780-B1-20422 has bronze elements running throughout its entire design, the titanium PVD version keeps the same bronze push pieces, bezel and crown but substitutes the majority of its architecture for titanium PVD finishes. Both the bronze and the titanium-coated model (ref: 7780-TB3-20423) have been fitted with a glossy black ceramic bezel with a tachymeter scale enriched in gold for the easy tracking of speed based on distance.
Grey-filled chronograph counters feature on the titanium model, whilst the bronze watch boasts sub-counters filled in shades of matching bronze. The 3 o’clock location is where you’ll find the 30-minute totaliser, whilst the small seconds are located on the opposite side at 9 o’clock. A pulsometer scale trims the edge of the dial in an antique gold colour and a bronze colour for the respective titanium and bronze case iterations. An unusual blue touch of colour is seen in the central chronograph second hand of the titanium PVD-coated model – pinky tones for the bronze model. Balancing both sub-dials nicely is a black-filled date window at 6 o’clock on both watches, accompanied by pill-shaped markers for the hours.
In terms of the architecture for the new Raymond Weil Freelancer Chronograph 7780 watch, the top of the case is sealed with a piece of scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass. The surface of this glass has been treated with anti-reflective material to assist with a clear view of the dial. The case of each watch is also water resistant to 100 meters and the models are fitted with an antique brown leather band with beige contrast stitching. Securing the leather strap to the wrist, Raymond Weil fits each leather band with a stainless steel folding clasp with a double push-security system.
At the heart of the new Raymond Weil Freelancer Chronograph 7780 watch is the Calibre RW5030, based on the Sellita SW510. It beats at a rhythm of 28,800 vibrations per hour and provides a useful power reserve once fully wound of 56 hours. The cam-operated chronograph constitutes a chunkier tactile experience under the fingertips, adding to the watch’s sturdy and solid persona on the wrist.
