Friday - 03 February 2023
The new quartz-powered Junghans 1972 Competition Edition Lemon watch is limited to just 150 pieces worldwide and has been released alongside its automatic sibling to mark the German watchmaker’s role as the official timekeeper for the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships
If you’re into sports watches with a difference, the Junghans 1972 Competition Edition Lemon quartz watch is something you’ll want to take a look at. Firstly, its vivid yellow and black aesthetic is perfect for adding a pop of colour to the wrist. Secondly, it features a tachymeter scale that not only enables you to determine the time required for a track section but it will also show you the speed at which it was completed. Its other key features include a comfortable and supple leather band in yellow and a quartz movement that provides a more affordable option if you’re weighing up the pros and cons of this model versus the automatic Junghans 1972 Competition Edition Lemon watch. The latter features an elliptical-shaped case and can be viewed in more detail here. The key difference between the automatic and this quartz version is that the quartz-powered model we’re going to look at in more detail today features a cushion-shaped case and a tachymeter on the bezel, as well as sub-counters placed at 3 and 9 o’clock as opposed to the 12 and 6 o’clock locations of the dial.
The new Junghans 1972 Competition Edition Lemon releases are celebratory models that mark the company’s role as the official timekeeper for the third year running for the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. This year it will be held in Planica Slovenia in March. Before this, Junghans participated in the 2019 event in Seefeld and then again in 2021 in Oberstdorf where it released a compressor-style GMT watch in colours of red, white and blue. The new automatic and quartz versions of the Junghans 1972 Competition Edition Lemon watch once again bring something new to the 1972 collection with bold shots of black in the tachymeter and sub-counter features.
Before we get into the details of the new quartz-powered version of the Junghans 1972 Competition Edition Lemon watch, we’ll touch on the automatic reference 27/4305.00. It features an elliptical-shaped steel case equipped with 100-meter water resistance. It also features the famous Bullhead design with push-pieces located at the top of the case in a retro stopwatch fashion. The sub-counters to the chronograph also echo this oval-shaped design and the tachymeter scale is found around the edge of the dial – these features are black lacquered for a strikingly sporty aesthetic. The watch is finished on a yellow perforated leather strap with black lining showing through the perforations.
The quartz version reference 41/4369.00 is rounder in shape and features a cushion-shaped profile but is crafted once again in stainless steel with sandblasted finishes that give the case an overall contemporary edge. The model is also water resistant to 100 meters and features a tough sapphire crystal glass front that protects the surface of the zesty yellow-coloured dial. Here’s where the watch looks a little different once again. The sub-counter at the 3 o’clock location displays a 24-hour format, whilst the 9 o’clock sub-counter offers a chronograph 60-minute function. In between these two, nestled at the 6 o’clock spot, is the small running seconds. The main hour and minute hands are treated with environmentally-friendly luminous material, as are the hour markers in a rectangular shape. Also in a rectangular shape is a date window at 4:30. The black and silver details on the tachymeter scale are found on the bezel of this watch, making it easy to record speed based on distance.
The new Junghans 1972 Competition Edition Lemon quartz watch also features chronograph pushers in the usual position at 2 and 4 o’clock on the case, as well as a durable case with a closed caseback for protecting the performance of a quartz movement inside. The model is completed on a stylish yellow leather band with rally-inspired perforations that expose the black lining of the strap through their surface. The strap also secures to the wrist with a robust folding clasp crafted from stainless steel. Limited to just 150 pieces worldwide, the watch comes displayed inside a beautiful presentation box.
