Fears Releases Brunswich Jubilee Edition Watch
Monday - 30 May 2022
Two new 38mm Brunswick watches have been launched by Fears. One of the two is named the Brunswick “Jubilee Edition” watch, released especially to coincide with the long-awaited Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The new Fears Brunswick “Jubilee Edition” watch in deep mesmerizing purple tones has been released alongside the Fears Brunswick Champagne watch but instead will be a numbered production for the year 2022 only.
Let’s rewind to last year when Fears released its first Brunswick watch to be made from precious metal since the 1960s. The platinum-crafted Brunswick PT model weighed three times more than the brand’s stainless steel models – you could literally feel its worth on the wrist and that made this Brunswick watch by Fears a particularly exciting and interesting model to add to the catalogue. Before that (and since the brand’s revival), back in 2016, Fears had been focusing on growing its quartz watch lines, but having released an automatic Brunswick watch just a year later, it spurred the brand into focusing mechanically, shifting from quartz-powered watches to automatic ones. It was clear by then that Edwin Fear’s great-great-great-grandson, Nicholas Bowman-Scargill, who had initially worked for Rolex in London, was intent upon seeing the company thrive in success once more (after 40 years of laying idol). The brand continued with the launch of several collections whose names were inspired by key locations that tell a story of Fears’ past.
Since the company’s re-launch, the first Brunswick watch was characterized by a white dial and applied Arabic numeral hours markers together with skeletonised hands and a reliable automatic movement that deemed the timepiece a great quality-to-price ratio. New variants to the line have since been added such as the bronze Midas watch, coated with two layers of gold, the PT watch as aforementioned and the two recently-released deep blue and salmon dial colours. Now it is time for an altogether new and attractive timepiece to enter the Brunswick collection. The specially numbered Brunswick “Jubilee Edition” watches are, as their name suggests, aptly released in time for the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations but are not limited in production, rather their special numbers are engraved onto their casebacks. The watch is released alongside the Brunswick Champagne watch – part of the brand’s core collection – which we’ll cover in a little more detail soon.
Nicholas Bowman-Scargill, (4th) Managing Director of Fears Watch Company, expresses his excitement for this new chapter of the Brunswick story; “It was only five short years ago that the first Brunswick, the Brunswick White, was launched and it’s been wonderful to see how its curvaceous shape has gained it a strong following. That’s why it’s especially exciting to introduce two new pieces to the Brunswick 38mm collection in the form of the Brunswick ‘Jubilee Edition’ and the Brunswick Champagne. I’m delighted that we’ve been able to mark The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with such a special watch. The rich tones of the Royal Purple colour complement the Brunswick steel case perfectly and I feel it’s a fitting tribute to Her Majesty’s incredible achievement. The fact this watch is joined by a new permanent member of the family with a lively gold dial brings me great joy especially as we’ve made the traditional champagne dial a little more contemporary in appearance.”
The new Fears Brunswick “Jubilee Edition” watch carries some key characteristics forward from previous Brunswick models. Examples of acute attention-to-detail can be admired throughout, such as its contesting dial textures, intended to shift under the light. The brand’s proprietary typeface, showcased on the dials of the salmon and deep blue versions of the Fears Brunswick watches, is known as the Edwin typeface and is used once again for this new Fears Brunswick “Jubilee Edition” watch. The typeface was created by talented typographer, Lee Yuen Rapati, who dedicated many hours to researching and studying Fears’ archive to curate this special effect. Developed in the same way as the salmon and blue dials of the Fears Brunswich line, the new “Jubilee Edition” watch features hour markers that are cut by machine before being positioned to stand at a height of 0.5mm above the surface of the dial.
The new Fears Brunswick “Jubilee Edition” watch is crafted from 316L stainless steel and measures a diameter, like its family members, of 38mm. Its cushion-shaped case is a signature design code of the Brunswick line and frames a dial represented in deep indulgent purple tones in a captivating sunburst finish. By turning the watch ever so slightly, you get to appreciate the dial’s full depth and breadth of tones, shifting from an almost black hue to lighter opulent purple tones depending on the angle of the light source. This special dial finish enables it to be worn as an elegant timepiece during the evening but also as an understated and practical timekeeping companion during the daytime. In a plainer context, you can dress the new Fears Brunswick watch up or down depending on the occasion in question. Contrasting with this special sunburst effect is the texture applied to the small sub-dial at 6 o’clock, representative of the small seconds function. This sub-counter is executed in a machined guilloche finish, adding a dramatic sense of depth and dimensions to the display. Interestingly, the new Fears Brunswick “Jubilee Edition” watch creates the sense of a layered dial without any over-fussy nonsense. The signature Fears hands, representing the hours and minutes, are once again skeletonised to keep in line with the rest of the Brunswick watch collection. Lastly, the Arabic numerals are diamond polished, interacting beautifully with the Edwin typeface.
There are two straps supplied with the new Fears Brunswick “Jubilee Edition” watch. One is a deep royal purple coloured Bristol leather strap adorned with a platinum-coloured contrast stitching and finished with an Alcantara lining. The other is a Pewter Grey Barenia leather band, tanned in France and made in Belgium. Inside the steel case of the new celebratory Fears Brunswick “Jubilee Edition” watch is the ETA 7001 manual-winding movement, capable of producing a 40-hour power reserve and performing at a rate of 21,600 vibrations per hour. The movement has beautiful Cotes de Geneve decorated elements, although these cannot be admired, since the caseback is closed to reveal the special production number of each timepiece. On the front of the case, however, a strong dome-shaped lens of anti-reflective and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass protects the surface of the dial from all manner of damaging external factors.
