Exploring the NEW Seiko Prospex “Cave Diving” 1968 Re-Interpretation Limited Edition
Tuesday - 11 July 2023
The new Seiko Prospex “Cave Diving” 1968 Re-interpretation watch is inspired by the reflections of a diver’s light cast upon the walls of a cave from the water’s surface with a beautiful graduated teal dial colour.
For some situations, a Seiko watch is the only consideration for the wrist. Extreme environments call for a hardy tool, one that will suffice for plenty of exploration. The Japanese watch brand has been manufacturing wristwatches for purposes such as these for a long time and many of these go by the name “Prospex”. The Prospex watch collection was developed by Seiko for sports watch fans in need of a companion that oozed elegance and style but came fully equipped with complete Japanese production. The company produces all its Prospex watches in-house, including the dials, cases and, of course, a reliable mechanical heart for guaranteeing unbeatable precision and accuracy. The name “Prospex” derives from the words “Professional” and “Specifications” and are designed to be durable, practical and reliable. Whether you are a sports watch lover or an adventure seeker, the chances are you have probably considered a Seiko Prospex at some point and may even own a few timepieces within your collection from this range.
A tool for cave exploration
Within the Prospex watch collection is a design known as the “Cave Diving” watch, which originally arrived on the scene in 1968. Equipped with a 10 Beat Hi Beat movement, its design was unique for the era in which it was born with its streamlined case design and crown located at the 4 o’clock position. The choice to combine both of these design elements meant that the watch could be used by a swimmer needing to navigate tight spaces inside caves and swim through narrow spaces. This modern re-interpretation watch by Seiko pays homage to the environment for which it is designed for, with its uniquely coloured dial in teal. The shade has never been seen before in a Seiko watch of this kind, further adding to its desirability. Once again, the brand fuses intricate Japanese watchmaking with an elegant design to provide a thing of complete beauty for devoted Seiko collectors and dive watch fans alike.
The new Seiko Prospex “Cave Diving” 1968 Re-Interpretation watch
The new “Cave Diving” watch from Seiko, belonging to the popular Prospex watch collection presents the time on a teal-coloured dial that echoes the inside of a cave and how light reflects from the ocean floor onto the surface of the cave walls. Textured and full of depth, the watch is given a new angle and dimension thanks to this unusual colour choice, enhanced all the more by its archetypal dive watch dial elements. These include the chunky hands and hour markers treated with lashings of Lumibrite.
The teal dial of the new Prospex “Cave Diving” Re-interpretation watch is also graduated, showing an entrancing darkening edge as the display reaches out to the inner edge of the bezel. The darkened edges reflect the blackness of the cave and how a diver’s torch shines onto the cave walls, with fissures included in its surface. The hour track is a mix of circular and rectangular markers – a double marker of which resides at 12 o’clock. This track is surrounded by a minute scale in a black band around the periphery of the dial, as well as a date window located at 4:30, dressed against a black-filled background. In true Prospex spirit, the sword-shaped hands are filled with lots of luminous material to provide clear timekeeping in dark conditions as are the hour markers.
A black unidirectional rotating bezel is marked with a clear 60-minute dive scale that can be aligned with the minute hand for accurate timekeeping underwater. As with any luxury dive watch, the unidirectional rotating bezel serves an integral role in the reliability and safety of a dive for any keen underwater explorer and is designed in a way that can only rotate counterclockwise to never accidentally extend dive time whilst undergoing an important underwater mission.
The robust stainless steel case of this Prospex “Cave Diving” 1968 Re-interpretation watch is equipped with 200-meter water resistance and is sealed with a strong piece of anti-reflective and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass on the front of its design. This, alongside the screw-down crown located at 4 o’clock, helps to uphold this water-resistant rating, whilst retaining a streamlined look for the case. A mix of brushed and polished elements seen in the case and the toothed design of the bezel brings the entire timepiece together. The Seiko dive watch is finished on a stainless steel bracelet with mixed links in brushed and polished effects, with a folding clasp that secures neatly to the underside of the wrist. The watch is also a salon-only limited edition model but can be purchased exclusively from C W Sellors Jura Watches today.
