About Seiko

In 1881, 21 year old entrepreneur Kintaro Hattori opened a shop selling and repairing clocks and watches in the district of Ginza in Tokyo. Only eleven years later, and the company Seikosha was founded. In Japanese, Seiko means “exquisite”, “minute” or “success” and “sha” means “house. It was here that Hattori produced his first clocks and marked the beginning of a company that would become one of the world’s most important luxury watch manufacturers.

One of their most pivotal launches occurred in 1960 with the Grand Seiko collection. The series was inspired by a dream to create a watch with perfect precision. Unsurprisingly, the Seiko team accomplished just that, beating records for accuracy with in-house movements like their Spring Drive and Hi-Beat calibres housed within stunning Zaratsu polished cases. Their determination to excel remains symbolised through the image of the lion that can be found on the case back of every Grand Seiko watch. This badge of strength and resolve only further establishes them as the ‘king of watches’.

Five years later, in 1965, they launched the world’s first Japanese divers watch which boasted a water resistant rating of 150 metres designated for use by the 8th Antarctic Research Expedition. This design would later become the inspiration behind the highly collectible Seiko Prospex collection, a series of high-performance diving watches regularly home to unique nicknames, as given by Seiko fans and collectors alike, such as the Tuna, Turtle, Monster and Samurai.  Another of Seiko’s iconic collections is the Seiko Presage, a family of stunning dress watches inspired by different aspects of Japanese culture.
