Meet the Seiko Speedtimer Solar Chronograph 40th Anniversary Limited Edition

The new Speedtimer Solar Chronograph 40th Anniversary Limited Edition watch by Seiko is a tribute to the Japanese brand’s first Analog Quartz Chronograph watch, in particular its first 1/100th second chronograph in 1992. It features a striking Khaki green dial, a black bezel and black-filled sub-counters in an unusual four-register layout.

If you’ve been following our online news journal here at Jura Watches, you may have recently read about the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Solar Chronograph WAC 2023 Limited Edition. The watch has been released in honour of the Japanese watchmaker’s partnership with this global sporting event, which is soon to take place in Budapest. Seiko has been the Official Timekeeper of the World Athletics Championship for 18 consecutive years and has, over this time, worked hard to expand the cutting-edge technology offered at the event. The World Athletics Championship runs for 9 days and is the highest level of senior outdoor athletics competition based on international track and field events in the world. The new Seiko watch released in celebration of this sporting event has a four-register dial layout and measures a 42mm diameter, sharing many of the same features as the new Seiko Speedtimer Solar Chronograph 40th Anniversary Limited Edition watch, exclusive to just 4000 pieces, which we’re going to look at in more detail today.

In recent years, the Seiko Speedtimer watch collection has been the range most associated with re-interpretations of popular models from the past. The design of the new additions, however (including the new Seiko Speedtimer Solar Chronograph panda and black-on-black models, which you can also find in our online range of new Seiko releases), take on a new look and have been designed to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the brand’s world-first Analog quartz watch released in 1983, named the 7A28.

The 42mm case of the new Speedtimer Solar Chronograph 40th Anniversary Limited Edition is crafted from stainless steel and appears wider in size due to its three push-pieces located at 2, 8 and 10 o’clock, as well as a crown that has been offset at 4 o’clock. To help with utilising these pushers and understanding their uses, a reference has been incorporated into the edge of the dial next to each respective pusher.

The dial of the watch is much different to the traditional tri-compax layout. Instead of having small sub-counters located at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock, the new Speedtimer Solar Chronograph watches have four registers. These include a 1/100th of a second counter at 3 o’clock that has been made possible by the addition of a brand new movement. The main timekeeping dial is located off-centre at 6 o’clock, whilst a 60-second sub-counter resides at 12 o’clock, accompanied by a 1/10th of a second at 9 o’clock. Having been fitted with a new Solar movement, it means the 8A50 uses sunlight and electric light to charge the battery. Once fully powered it can promise a full reserve of around 6 months. As a quartz movement it also promises unparalleled accuracy, with a deviation of just +/- 15 seconds per month.

As mentioned, the new Speedtimer Solar Chronograph 40th Anniversary Limited Edition watch has been released in celebration of the Japanese brand’s 1983 analogue quartz chronograph. In particular, it features the same black bezel framing a Khaki green dial as seen in the brand’s first 1/100th of a second chronograph that was released back in 1992. Even its metal bracelet is a close match to the original, with a distinctive black strip running through the middle of a three-link stainless steel bracelet.

The black-filled registers set against a Khaki green coloured dial are a very stylish combination that achieves a unique colour scheme. The stopwatch functions of the chronograph are activated by the hammer-shaped buttons, which are designed for easy operation under the fingertips. Additional features of the new chronograph include a 12.9mm case thickness, a water-resistant capability of 100 meters and a curved case front forged from super strong anti-reflective and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass. The back of the case features a limited edition number engraved into the stainless steel. As aforementioned, the watch is fitted on a steel link bracelet with black-coated links running through the middle and a folding clasp to secure comfortably around the wrist, completed with an engraving of the famous Seiko name upon its surface.

This new Speedtimer watch from Seiko belongs to the company’s ever-popular Prospex collection – a name that combines the words “specifications” and “Professional”. If you’ll like to learn more about the new four-register chronograph or would like to make a purchase and add one of these 4000 unique timepieces to your collection, you can visit the product page here online at Jura Watches, or call and speak to a member of our sales team today on 01335 453453.
