Czapek Antarctique Watch Collection Review

Sporty yet sophisticated, the new Czapek Antarctique watch collection starts a new chapter in the brand’s history with an unprecedented style that pushes the boundaries of sport-chic further than before while also featuring their new SXH5 calibre. Inspired by a family trip to Antarctica taken by one of Czapek’s most historical and active shareholders, the collection is designed to reflect both the sheer breathtaking beauty of nature at its most pristine while also becoming a preeminent symbol of the brand’s devotion to environmental welfare.

"The name resonated because it also represents our commitment to doing our part,” explains Xavier de Roquemaurel. "It's not only in the use of recycled gold for the rotor. It's about safeguarding other irreplaceable assets as well, like the many Swiss artisans dedicated to the traditional watchmaking art. This perfectly illustrates our motto, 'We Collect Rare People'."

The Czapek Antarctique is currently available in two versions: the Terre Adélie which is the main collection available in a choice of dial colours each limited to 99 pieces and the Orion Nebula, a limited edition of 10 pieces named after its hand-varnished dial. Both versions are closely related with slim 40.5mm stainless steel cases and transparent case backs which reveal the powerful 30-millimeter SXH5.01 automatic caliber conceived exclusively by Czapek’s concepteur, Daniel Martinez.

The SXH5.01 movement has been engineered entirely in-house by the Czapek team and boasts exceptional architecture with 7 bridges cut out like lace allowing for a clear view of the finishing. It also showcases an 8.8 Newton mm single barrel loaded by a micro-rotor in certified 100% recycled 18k gold to free up the view on the movement and let it remain reasonably flat and thin at only 4.5mm. The calibre also features a power reserve of 56 hours, 28 jewels and an exclusive calendar positioned at 6 o’ clock to stay true to Czapek’s aesthetics based on vertical symmetry.

The Czapek Antarctique Terre Adélie watches are made to be in a limited edition series of only 99 pieces as a tribute to the French explorer Jules Dumont d’Urville who named an Antarctica island after his wife, Adèle, during his daring expedition to the continent in 1840. They come in four lame dial colours: Deep Blue, Secret Alloy, Black Ink and Burgundy all decorated with luminescent steel sword shaped hands. The Czapek Antarctique Orion Nebula on the other hand stands alone with its unique hand-varnished dial inspired by the diffuse nebula situated in the Milky Way.

Both variants of the Czapek Antarctique watches continue to impress with box sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment, a water resistant rating of 120 metres and a screw down crown. They are presented on integrated stainless steel bracelets with the patented Czapek “Easy Release” system as standard but are also available with optional calfskin leather or rubber straps.
