Bell & Ross BR03-92 Grey Lum Watch Review
Friday - 10 April 2020
Made to be seen, the Bell & Ross BR03-92 Grey Lum is the fourth instalment to the Swiss brand’s ultra-legible BR LUM collection which sees fully treated Superluminova C3 dials designed for optimal legibility during both day and night. Named after “lumiere”, or French for light, the BR03-92 Grey Lum perfectly embodies the spirit of the aviation brand and their four basic principles: legibility, functionality, precision and reliability; four requirements that could mean the difference between life and death for pilots.
The new Bell & Ross BR03-92 Grey Lum makes it clear the brand is wholly serious about functionality, and while many other luxury watch manufacturers make it their mission to conquer timekeeping during the day, Bell & Ross have once again pushed the boundaries of design and gone to extreme lengths to ensure their timepieces perform just as well after sundown. What first appears to be a minimalistic dial with classic Arabic numerals and a small date window is in fact the centrepiece to almighty innovation. The anthracite grey dial with sunray pattern is specially designed to capture the light and play with its reflections while the numerals and hour and minute hands are treated in bright green Superluminova C3 treatment.
Compared to the three military inspired BR LUM watches that came before it, the Bell & Ross BR03-92 Grey Lum watch boasts an arguably more urban appeal, harnessing modern aesthetics like the addition of a satin-polished stainless steel case – something of a first for the collection. The case measures to 42mm in width and still instantly evokes the aeronautical and aviation instrument panels that Bell & Ross take inspiration from. The iconic ‘circle in a square’ design is complemented by four parallel screws around the edge and a grey-green velvet calfskin leather strap which embodies the green colours of the Superluminova ® C3 treated dial.
Housed within the 100 metre water resistant case and hidden behind the screw down case back is the BR-CAL.302 automatic winding movement. While fans still eagerly await an in-house movement by Bell & Ross, the Sellita SW300-1 base calibre does the job with highly reliable central hands for hours, minutes and seconds, a date window at 4.30H and a power reserve of 38 hours. The Swiss made calibre is also decorated with 25 jewels and promises a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hours.
