Hamilton Khaki Takeoff AC Air Zermatt Limited Edition Watch Review

Hamilton has unveiled the new Khaki Takeoff AC Air Zermatt Limited Edition, a watch created in partnership with the Swiss mountain rescue service, Air Zermatt.

The timepiece commemorates the 150th anniversary of the first Matterhorn ascent and will be used in the dashboards of Air Zermatt's helicopters to measure the exact time while on a rescue mission.

The Khaki Takeoff AC Air Zermatt Limited Edition was introduced at a launch event in the Swiss mountain village of Zermatt in January 2015. Air Zermatt demonstrated a spectacular rescue mission simulation, while aerobatic pilot Nicolas Ivanoff performed thrilling stunts. Ivanoff is an ambassador of Hamilton watches and regularly helps the brand to integrate real and relevant aviation functionality into its Khaki Aviation collection.

Limited to just 60 pieces, each of the new Khaki Takeoff AC Air Zermatt Limited Edition watches features a case back engraved with the name and altitude of one of the mountain peaks visible from the Matterhorn. These special Hamilton watches will be produced and sold exclusively in Switzerland.

The watch design was inspired by a Hamilton elapsed time clock from World War II, considered at the time to be the most complicated aircraft clock. It has a bi-directional turning flange, driven by the bezel, that has the capacity to record a countdown. A turning action is required to unlock the case from the wristwatch, allowing it to be used as a cockpit or table clock.

The Hamilton Khaki Takeoff AC Air Zermatt Limited Edition has a stainless steel with black PVD case, and is powered by the H-31 movement with a 60-hour power reserve. The red detailing of the model pays tribute to both the colour of Air Zermatt's helicopters and the iconic colour of the Valais region, where the company is based.

A date counter has been replaced with an hour counter, allowing the wearer to measure elapsed time in flights that last longer than one hour. The hands are a reinterpretation of the classical hands of traditional pilots' watches, with the addition of a plane-shaped pointer on the chronograph hand, as a themed styling signature. The crown is positioned at 12 o'clock for pilots' ease of use.
